Ordinance to limit food truck hours in Appleton withdrawn

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Appleton city staff have killed a controversial plan that would have changed the hours that food trucks could operate in the city’s downtown district.

According to the minutes from the municipal services committee, the ordinance modification that would have changed food truck hours was “withdrawn by staff without objection by the committee.”

The ordinance modification would have prevented food truck drivers from operating past midnight in the downtown district. Appleton police officers originally proposed this change as a way to curb nightlife violence at bars in the city by reducing crowds late at night.

Food truck owners said the ordinance unfairly targeted them for something they didn’t cause. They also said closing at midnight would seriously hurt their businesses because people start patronizing their businesses at bar close time which is later than midnight at most establishments.
