GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – On Thursday afternoon, 25-year-old Jackson Vogel was found guilty of first-degree intentional homicide in the August 2024 killing of another inmate. The charge came with a hate crime modifier.
Court records show that Vogel’s homicide trial began on Monday, June 2, and ended on Wednesday, June 4, after a jury concluded the trial with a guilty verdict.
Vogel pleaded not guilty on October 15, 2024, to the killing of 19-year-old Micah Laureano, both inmates at the Green Bay Correction Institution (GBCI) at the time of the homicide.

On August 29, 2024, multiple officers were sent to GBCI shortly after 9:30 p.m. after Laureano was found not breathing and pulseless. According to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Laureano and Vogel were cellmates and had occupied the same cell for “only hours before the incident.”
The complaint says that a piece of paper was over the window, covering a view into the cell. The officer was later able to see the victim hanging from the top bunk with his hands and ankles tied together, according to the complaint.
The complaint also quoted Vogel as saying, “What does it matter? He is already dead. I’ve done this before,” while not complying with officers’ commands.

While authorities interviewed Vogel, he allegedly admitted to killing Laureano because he was ‘bored’ while using derogatory terms to describe Laureano. Reportedly claiming that the victim’s race, ‘among other things,’ played a role in his motivation.
Vogel will have a sentencing hearing on June 27 at 8:30 a.m.
