Firefighters were on the scene at the large, two-story, multi-unit apartment complex and said no smoke or flames were visible; however, a strong smell of electrical burning could be detected from outside the building.
Officials say some residents from the building had self-evacuated, with the remaining residents having to be asked to leave their apartments. Crews entered the complex and confirmed there was no smoke or fire in any of the 12 apartment units.
Power to the building was turned off to investigate the burning smell, which led firefighters to find a hole in the roof of the complex where the lightning had struck.
No injuries were reported in this incident, but an estimated 24 people are now without a home until an electrician can assess the damage.
No other information is available at this time. Local Five will update this story should additional details be released.
