Respiratory illnesses such as the flu and COVID-19 are beginning to decline, but other viruses remain a concern. Officials say norovirus, which causes gastrointestinal illness, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are currently among the most prevalent.
“With more people gathering indoors, especially in confined spaces, it becomes easier for germs to spread,” Brown County nurse Julie Schoenrock said.
Health experts emphasize that simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of illness during holiday gatherings. Frequent handwashing, especially before and after eating, and disinfecting surfaces are key steps. Officials note that not all cleaning products are effective against norovirus and recommend using bleach-based disinfectants.
Doctors at Bellin Health in Ashwaubenon say that while influenza cases are declining, they are seeing an increase in secondary health issues following recent illnesses, including asthma flare-ups and dehydration.
“We’re seeing fewer flu cases, but more complications afterward,” Dr. Paul Scott said.
Dr. Scott also stresses the importance of staying home when feeling ill, particularly during the holiday season.
“If you’re experiencing significant symptoms like body aches, heavy coughing, or gastrointestinal issues, it’s best to stay home and avoid spreading illness to others,” Scott said.
