GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) — After more than seven decades of serving walk-in customers, a long-standing Green Bay pharmacy is preparing for a major change.

Streu’s Pharmacy, located on Main Street in downtown Green Bay, announced it will close its community retail store on November 30, 2025, as part of a strategic move to focus entirely on long-term care pharmacy services.
The decision comes as many independent pharmacies across the country struggle to remain financially viable. According to Streu’s leadership, declining reimbursement rates from pharmacy benefit managers — in many cases paying less than the actual cost of medications — have made the traditional retail model unsustainable.
“Streu’s Pharmacy has been serving our community for over 70 years,” said Nicole Schreiner, CEO of Streu’s Pharmacy. “We have made the decision to restructure our organization and focus only on our long-term care services and discontinue serving patients in our community pharmacy.”
Long-term care pharmacy services focus on patients living in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities — many of whom require daily support with medication management. Streu’s provides specialized services, including blister packaging, which helps caregivers and non-medical staff safely administer prescriptions.
“It’s just become difficult for community pharmacies to become financially viable due to the pharmacy reimbursement managers reimbursing numerous prescriptions below cost,” Schreiner explained. “We feel fortunate that we can continue serving patients in this way and remain part of their healthcare team — just in a different capacity.”
For facilities that have partnered with Streu’s for decades, the shift means continuity of care for some of the region’s most vulnerable patients.
“This pharmacy is the main reason we are able to do what we do,” said Brianna Wright, Program Manager with Boll Adult Care Concepts. “We bring blister-packed medications directly to individuals with their names and dosages clearly labeled, and that system is essential to our work.”

Once the retail side closes, Streu’s will operate as a “closed-door” pharmacy, focusing exclusively on delivering medications, coordinating with care facilities and supporting patients with complex medical needs.
Pharmacy officials say they are already working closely with customers to help transfer prescriptions and ensure there are no interruptions in care as the transition approaches.
