GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – While it may seem like just an excuse to enjoy some sweet sugary treats, National Donut Day is much more, as it celebrates those who fed the armed forces during World War I.
The Salvation Army created National Donut Day in 1938 to honor the ‘Donut Lassies,’ and now it’s an annual event every June on the first Friday. To celebrate this year, the Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay partnered with Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppes to give away donuts and hold charity events.
Walleye Weekend kicks off in Fond du Lac with fishing tournaments, music and activities
From 7 a.m. until 10 a.m., Uncle Mike’s locations across the region handed out free original wartime recipes. In addition, special flavors exclusive to today and two brand new fan-picked donuts were available as well.
Not only were people able to earn a sweet treat, but also the feeling of helping out, as for every dozen donuts sold, $2 was donated to the Salvation Army.
Plus, the celebration doesn’t just end when the clock strikes midnight and turns to Saturday, as Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe sponsors the fourth annual Donut 5K at Green Isle Park.
The Saturday event begins at 8:30 a.m. with a ‘Sprinkle Sprint’ for kids, and the official 5K at 9 a.m.
Live music and donuts are available from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m., with proceeds going to support The Salvation Army Kroc Center Scholarship Fund.
Register for the race at this link until 8 a.m. on Saturday.
