There was some confusion with viewers as competition began in Sochi last night. People were searching for the Opening Ceremony. It will be on TOINGIHT at 7:30 ETS. The additional day of competition had to be added to this year’s Winter Olympics because of all the new competitions added.
The Games began with figure skating – men’s and team pairs short programs, also qualifying rounds for men’s and women’s snowboard slopestlye qualifications.
Russia stole the show for figure skating…
Team pairs short program, Russia took the lead. The couple of, Tatyana Volosozhar and Maksim Trankov, performed a beautiful piece dressed, in my opinion, like Cinderella and her Prince. Russia also took men’s short program with a performance by Evgeny Plushenko.
Russia has a total of 19 points so far, Canada 17, and China at 15.. with two more night of team vs team to come.
Jeremy Abbott of Team USA, crashed to the ice during his short program finishing 7th. It seems like the nerves of international competition get the best of him – and rumor has it he will be retiring after the games.
USA pairs team placed 5th overall…. USA is currently tied with Germany and France in 5th place.
Competition resumes Saturday with women’s and ice dancing short programs

As for Slopestyle…
After Shaun White removed himself from the competition, it was interesting to see how the rest would hold up – three of the men’s athletes are moving on in the competition.
Two women’s slopestyle boarders are going straight to the finals, and the other two representatives will be going onto the semifinals.
Competition begins again Sunday.
