GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Police in Green Bay say reckless driving is increasing across the city, with officers citing speeding, impaired driving and distracted driving as major concerns heading into the warmer months.

Authorities say the most dangerous behaviors they are seeing involve excessive speeds and impairment, including not only alcohol but also drugs. Officials emphasize the issue is widespread and not limited to one neighborhood.
In recent weeks, the consequences have already become apparent. Police reported at least two serious crashes resulting in significant injuries, underscoring the risks tied to unsafe driving habits.
Distracted driving, particularly cellphone use, remains one of the most common dangers. Officers warn that even a glance at a phone can have life-altering consequences.
“It doesn’t take long,” Tom Denney, Green Bay police captain of the community service division, said. “If you pick up your phone to read a text and the car in front of you stops, you may have less than a second to react.”
In response, police say they are increasing patrols and enforcement efforts throughout the spring and summer. Still, they stress that enforcement alone will not solve the problem.
“Slow down, pay attention and make sure you have a safe ride home if you are drinking and driving,” Green Bay police traffic sergeant Sean Hamill said. “Always make sure you have a plan ahead of time or utilize ride share programs.”

Police also encourage parents to set a good example for young passengers, noting that children often learn driving habits by observing adults behind the wheel.
“Modeling safe behavior and having those conversations can make a big difference,” Denney said.
