(WFRV) – Officials with the Luxemburg-Casco School District say they are banning highly caffeinated drinks for elementary-aged students at the Intermediate School.
This ban comes as school administration reports seeing an increase in students bringing beverages like Alani, Bubbl’R, and others to school. They add that while these types of drinks are not specifically addressed in the student handbook, “they are not appropriate for elementary-aged students” and will no longer be allowed during the school day.

A Medical Assistant with the school district says that caffeine can have significant and immediate impacts on developing children with even just modern amounts, causing increased heart rate, jitteriness, headaches, stomach discomfort, difficulty concentrating, and disrupted sleep. All of these side effects can interfere with a student’s ability to learn and safely participate in class activities throughout the school day.
As of April 15th, school officials have stated the following:
Effective immediately, students in grades 3 through 6 may not bring or consume highly caffeinated beverages at school. If these drinks are brought to school, they will be collected and sent home.
The Luxemburg-Casco School Board says this new expectation is in line with their commitment to student health and nutrition via Policy 8510. They add that the Board has established goals to promote and create an environment for students to improve their health and well-being by maintaining healthy eating habits and other lifelong healthy choices.
Parents are asked to make sure their children are coming to school with appropriate beverages that help to support their health, focus, and overall well-being, such as milk or water.
