“Serving as your sheriff for the past four terms and 36 years with the agency has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Matz said. “I am immensely proud of the dedication shown by the men and women of the sheriff’s office and grateful for the support this community has consistently shown.”
Matz said the decision follows a lengthy period of reflection and consideration of personal needs. He added that he remains committed to serving through the end of his term and ensuring a smooth transition to the next elected sheriff.
Matz also endorsed Darin Rice to succeed him.
“Darin is a proven and dedicated leader of the agency and will advance the agency in many ways,” Matz said.
Matz concluded by thanking the community for the privilege of serving and said the support he has received over the years has meant more than he can express.
