KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WFRV) – Kaukauna mayoral candidate Daniel Schafer has announced he is stepping down from the race, citing the personal toll the campaign has taken on him and his family.
In a statement, Schafer said that after many conversations with his family and close friends, he made the decision to withdraw.
“From the beginning of this campaign, I said transparency would be the foundation of my platform,” Schafer said. “I believe it is something our community has not had in a long time.”
Schafer said that throughout the campaign, a significant amount of hate and anger had been directed toward him, which he said has affected both him and his family.
“Thank you again to everyone who supported me and who believes in our community deserves a positive change,” he said.
Schafer added that anyone who donated to his campaign will receive a refund. He also said supporters may keep their yard signs.
