(WFRV) – As Free Fishing Weekend arrives on Saturday, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) sent out a few reminders for everybody participating, from experts to newbies.
The annual event runs from Saturday until Sunday as anglers with or without experience have a chance to try out a beloved staple of Wisconsin—ice fishing, albeit with extra caution.
Sustainably Speaking: Wisconsin flash freezes and the impact on aquatic life
The DNR urges fishers to be careful, as no ice is ever 100% safe, and DNR officials don’t monitor ice conditions. The best source to monitor ice conditions is a local bait shop or fishing club.
In addition, the DNR says to dress in warm, water-resistant layers with waterproof boots and spike cleats to increase traction. Experts also recommend packing extra layers, including hats, gloves and a rope/ice claws for added safety.
