The Games began with the Opening Ceremony. But first a little interview with President Barack Obama.
Obama will not be attending the Olympic Games at any point. But, he wished everyone good luck, believes our athletes represent what’s best in our country and is proud of the work they have put into this opportunity. He can’t wait to see some gold come home and see everyone again at the White House. He ended with a big “GO USA!”
Onto the actual ceremony – (just a couple random facts from the night – or things I found interesting)
Story of Russia started out the show narrated by an 11 year old girl. Interesting fact, she actually broke her arm during training for the opening ceremony but that didn’t scare her away; her dream is to come back to the Olympics one day as an athlete.
There was a slight mishap, a snowflake did not open to form the 5th Olympic ring – made me giggle a little.
During the parade of nations, Bermuda sported some Bermuda shorts.. How cleaver! – Really shorts in 50 degrees? But with our Wisconsin winter this year, if it were 50 degrees outside, I would most likely be running around in a bikini!
The USA outfits were revealed days ago on the TODAY show, but this was the first chance to see all our athletes decked out in red, white, and blue. While many people feel we won the “ugly Christmas sweater award,” I personally really like them! If you were looking to purchase one, I’m sorry to break it to you, Ralph Lauren’s website is already sold out in both men’s and women’s styles… Not that I would have been able to drop almost $600 for the sweater. On a positive note, 100% of the proceeds from the Limited Edition Team USA Opening Ceremony Cardigan will be donated to the U.S. Olympic Committee. If you would like to still show some support for our Olympians, check out teamusa.ralphlauren.com or teamusashop.com… I might have to purchase myself some mittens at least – something even this broke college student can afford!
Todd Lodwick, Nordic combine skier, was the flag carrier for USA. This is his sixth Olympic appearance. After a little research (thanks dad) I now know Lodwick was selected for this honor by his fellow Team USA members!… How cool to be selected by your peers to represent your country!
The Russian story continued, after the conclusion of the parade, with some amazing performances. As someone who has danced for around twenty years, to me, the ballet performance was jaw dropping! Overall it was a spectacular show! And after 123 days, 40,000+ miles, 14,000 torchbearers, and 83 different regions of Russia – the torch has arrived! LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
Check out Saturday’s competitions. There’s lots too choose from but if you are looking for Wisconsin’s own, check out women’s hockey and men’s speedskating!! Let’s see if we will have some hardware after Saturday! Stop by later for more updates!

(P.S. On a little side note! I agree with Sam’s pick for the Bachelor! GO RENEE!)
